Pay it forward – October 2010
The cooler temperatures give notice that October is upon us. I am a hot weather, living-in-flip-flops kind of gal … but October does happen to be the month that has my favorite holiday in it: HALLOWEEN! Romantics choose Valentine’s Day, Patriots choose Veteran’s Day and Shopaholics choose Christmas. What’s so special about Halloween, you ask? You get to dress up and pretend to be anything that you want. You get to jump out and scare people. You get to go to stranger’s houses and they give you free candy. What’s not to like?
I have a good friend who has an annual, not-to-be-missed Halloween party, so I’ve had the opportunity to indulge my creative side for many years now. By far, my perennial favorite is dressing up as a pirate. I’m not sure what it is that attracts me to this costume. I don’t look particularly fetching in an eye patch and a hook, so that’s not it. I think it’s the freedom that’s inherent in a pirate’s life: being out on the ocean, swigging rum, singing sea chanteys, searching for buried treasure.
The only place for a pirate-in-training who loves warm weather is the Caribbean. My favorite spot is St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. I’ll be headed back there in January and want to bring along a fellow swash buckler while helping to raise money for our wonderful Network. We’re giving all our members a chance to buy a $50 ticket for a one in one hundred chance to win a trip to St. Thomas with Dirty Janet as your guide. If you think the breakfast meetings are fun ... you haven’t seen anything yet! The winner gets round trip airfare, five nights/six days in a one-bedroom villa (I get the pull out couch … you get the queen sized bed), pick up and drop off at the airport, chauffeuring around the Island (I’ve mastered the driving on the left), a trip to St. John for snorkeling at Hawk’s Nest and Trunk Bay, and a necklace or anklet made by my Rasta buddy, named Fire.
I said at the outset of this year, we are going to have FUN. What other Network that you know of offers you the chance to get away with almost all your expenses paid, for only $50? I don’t know of any, except SSWBN.
Happy to lead with fun and humility,
Janet

Pay It Forward Tip for October: When you’re putting away your summer clothes and getting out the fall/winter duds, take a moment to really consider your summer wardrobe. If there are articles of clothing that you really don’t wear or that you’ve out grown, set them aside. Call up a group of girlfriends and have an “exchange” party. It will be a fun night with your friends and a free shopping night. Anything that remains unclaimed can be donated to your local Salvation Army or Homeless Center.
