The Ripple Effect

Last week I took my kids to the beach. They are just learning to skip rocks across the water surface, an added talent to the single throw with the big splash they have been enjoying for years.  My daughter (four years old) said: “ Look Mom, it bounced!” My oldest (nine years old), never one to be outdone, said, “ I bet I can make it skip.”  Then all three of my children proceeded to skip rocks across the water and wonder at the ripples they would cause.  Some just washed away, others crashed and intersected with each other and yet others seemed to go on forever.

While I was enjoying their wonder at this small pleasure, I was reminded that all of our growth comes from just this kind of ripple.  Whether it be in our personal lives or in our businesses, it can be either the single stone that splashes and disappears, or the one that skips and grows beyond our expectations that keep things interesting.
