Protect Yourself

 I am an unabashed optimist but often find myself in the position of tempering my optimism with the practical need to protect myself and my clients.

 Anyone who does not have a homestead on their principal residence is just plain stupid.

 Go on the website for the county registry of deeds in the county where your property is located.  The site will explain what a homestead is and the process.  If you do not know in which county your property is located go onto www.masslandrecords.com .  If you prepare the homestead yourself the only …

 Learned From Abroad

 My wife and I just returned from a wonderful trip to Europe.  It was perfect.  We were on a riverboat in Netherlands and Belgium, saw the tulips, and ate the mussels.

 I thoroughly enjoyed meeting and talking with people all over the world.  The most insightful people were the cab drivers.  One came from Azerbaijan and one came from Turkey via Georgia and Armenia.  They came to Europe for a better life.  They were not political or terrorists.  They wanted a better life for their families.  One had a son who had autism and one …

Imagination

 What has your imagination allowed you to do?  Are you stymied by your imagination, or stimulated by it?

 Imagination that has kept you from moving forward and tackling old issues and creating new adventures is called fear.  Who has told you that you could not do what you wanted to do?  Was it your lawyer, your accountant, your financial advisor?  If it was, then simply stated, you have the wrong professionals working with you.  You have the wrong staff around you and your business plan is wrong.

 If you spend 15-hour days, six days a week working at your …

Is There a New Pardigm?

 For the past few years some people have talked about a paradigm shift.  Whatever is meant by that by others, here is the definition that I like: Get back to basics.  Before you start tweeting, facebooking, linking, plaxing, going to BNI, attending forums and seminars, get back to basics.

 As an attorney with more than thirty years of experience, my advice to my clients is to do everything in moderation.  Stop multi-tasking as much as you do if you do not find it productive.  Plan what you are going to do …

Homestead:  Cost-Effective Risk Reduction

Each of us takes a chance when starting a business, and we continue to take chances each day we are in business.  That is an essential part of capitalism.  Nevertheless, it is also an essential part of capitalism to risk only what has to be risked and no more.  We understand this almost instinctively.

On the home-front, we tend to have less clarity.  Thankfully, a new homestead law will go into effect shortly.  This law will benefit everyone who owns a home in Massachusetts.  In it, the definition of ‘home’ includes condominium units as …

A New Year’s Resolution:

Remember the Past and Move Into the Future

It is the beginning of a new year.  The economy is better for everyone who is working and for those whose mortgage has not been foreclosed.

For all of us though, moving forward is what we have to do.  As with other members of the South Shore Women’s Business Network, I and my firm — Gordon, Mond & Ott, P.C. — are here to help.

As one of the first — if not the first male — members of the SSWBN, I have benefitted from my membership and …

Early Resolutions

Two thousand eleven is almost here.  Since all sole proprietors are calendar year taxpayers, as are most corporations, it is time to do some planning.  Perhaps it is time to incorporate as of January 1, 2011.  Maybe it is time to contribute to an IRA, 401 (k) or other retirement account;  or time to do a will and balance out investments, selling losers and winners.

It is also time to slough off old relationships, fire bad clients and customers.  It may be time to find out if your lawyer, accountant and financial advisor have done their best for …

SWEATING THE SMALL STUFF

I am reading through a book from 1997 entitled, Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff.  Its core principles are:

1.      Learn to live in the moment;

2.      Do one thing at a time;

3.      Soften your most stubborn positions;

4.      Cut yourself some slack;

5.      Think of what you have instead of what you want;  and

6.      Ask yourself: will this matter a year from now?

Once you have applied all these principles and you have only the “Big Stuff” left, then call me, Barry Gordon, because the Big Stuff is what we do at Gordon, …

Time to Invest:  Are You Ready?

The economy is improving. Are you ready to invest in it? As the squirrels do, this is the time to gather your “acorns” to have them available to use during the new investment season.

How should you design your storage vehicle?  You might choose a trust, a corporation or an LLC.  It might be a homestead on your principal residence.  Making sure that what you currently have is protected before you venture out for the new expedition is important.

Then gather up your arms and supplies — in today’s vernacular, your business plan, marketing …

Where There is a Will, There is a Relative

You may have heard me say this before but it is so important that it needs to be repeated:

These days families are not waiting for the parent to die –  they are starting early to cause everlasting friction.

More and more adult children are fighting with each other and with their parents about parental care, control of estates and exercising control.  It is important that parents decide for themselves how they want to be cared for, and will be left for them.

Parents should make certain that they have their …
